Those of you who follow me may know that I come from the oil patch, a small town in OK where oil was akin to life, economically speaking, and have been fascinated for the last few years by how the worldwide energy industry is developing.
Are middle classes natural? Are they an inevitable result of the rise of wealth that has accompanied modernism and the industrial revolution? Or are they more tenuous creations, made possible by the wealth that capitalism’s creates, but dependent on the moderating, shaping influence of human institutions?
